Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has personally donated GH160,000 to help those affected by the catastrophic water breach from the Akosombo Dam.
The spillage has drowned several communities in eight districts, predominantly in the Volta Region as well as the Eastern and Greater Accra areas, and thousands of people have been forced to flee.
According to a Ghana360news correspondent, Dr. Bawumia made the donation on Wednesday, October 17, when he visited some of the Volta Region’s devastated areas to aid the victims.
So far, the government has responded to the disaster by evacuating affected individuals to 20 holding centers and providing emergency relief supplies through the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Inter-Ministerial Committee established on the instructions of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to manage the disaster.
According to Ghana360news, Dr. Bawumia’s private donation was intended to supplement the assistance the government has already provided to the victims who have been forced to relocate.
The Vice President offered his condolences and reassured the victims that the government was committed to both immediate relief and helping the afflicted people go back to their normal lives.
“There is such pain in the eyes of our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers who are seated here. What has transpired has completely changed their lives,” according to Dr. Bawumia, who spoke to Ghana360news.
“These are folks who were going about their daily lives as usual to take care of themselves, and I am pained by the fact that they now actually depend on others for their livelihood.
“I want to reassure you that the government will do everything in its power to help the affected individuals by offering relief and helping to rebuild their way of life.
“Through the Inter Ministerial Committee, we are looking at a more sustained support so that those affected can reclaim their livelihoods. We are not only looking at temporary relief.”
New Bakpa in the Central Tongu District, Sogakope and Sokpoe in the South Tongu District, and other communities were visited by the Vice President.
Along with Volta Region Minister Dr. Archibald Letsa, Interior Minister Ambrosse Dery, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and representatives from NADMO and the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Vice President was escorted.
