The Management of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (NEDCo) has refuted claims that they bribed assembly members and opinion leaders in the Greater Tamale area to oversee the installation of new prepaid meters. Accusations have arisen from some residents who believe that assembly members accepted bribes and played a role in the installation of these meters in various communities within the metropolis.

The residents’ discontent with the new prepaid meters has led to vows from some individuals to vote against the incumbent assembly members, attributing their decision to the alleged involvement of these assembly members in the meter installation process.

It is important to note that the management of NEDCo denies any wrongdoing in this matter, asserting that they did not engage in bribery to facilitate the installation of prepaid meters. The situation underscores the challenges and controversies that can arise in the implementation of utility services, and it remains to be seen how this dispute will be resolved and its potential impact on the local political landscape.

However Mr. Maxwel K. Kotoka, the Manager of Corporate Communications at (NEDCo) refuted the accusations in a statement signed and copied to Ghana360news.com, saying, “NEDCo wishes to categorically and emphatically deny these allegations as they are spurious, unfounded and wicked”.

He further explained that, “for the avoidance of doubts, it must be stressed that NEDCo does not need to (and will not) bribe or inappropriately influence any Assembly Member, Opinion Leader or any other person for that matter, to be able to go about her legitimate mandate or duties; this mandate includes the upgrading of lines, injection of transformers and the deployment of meters. Obviously, just as NEDCo does not have to bribe anybody to upgrade lines or inject transformers, so does it not need to bribe anyone to deploy meters”.
