On November 8, Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, is expected to address Parliament to give an update on the just finished limited voter registration drive.
The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who made this disclosure also said that the head of the EC would address the House on electoral issues the following week.
He also mentioned how crucial it is to hear from the EC before passing judgment.
The leadership of the business committee proposed, Mr. Speaker [Alban Bagbin], in accordance with order 44, that the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission be invited to appear before the house [on] November 8, 2023, at a close sitting in order to brief members on issues pertaining to the commission’s recently concluded limited voter registration drive and other related matters.
“Of course, it wasn’t necessary to castigate the EC when you have not heard from them, it was unnecessary,” the Majority Leader said.
Over 600,000 new voters were registered during this activity, which took place between September 12 and October 2.
The Minority in Parliament said that the EC’s decision to limit registration to district offices had put Members of Parliament under further financial strain.
The public, including civil society organizations and the opposition NDC, expressed disapproval of the move to restrict registration centers to district offices and demanded more easily accessible places.
The EC stuck to its plan in spite of the calls and completed district office registration by October 2, 2023, without asking for an extension.
