As the watchdog for the responsible handling and application of petroleum earnings, members of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) have chosen Emerita Professor Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schandorf, who represents the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS), to serve as the committee’s new chairperson.
At a meeting on Tuesday, October 25, 2023, the members of the Accountability Committee unanimously elected her as their new chairperson. Kwame AdomFrimpong, the professor, hands off to her.
Emerita Professor Ardayfio-Schandorf, who will hold the position for a year, is the first female chairperson to be chosen since PIAC’s founding.
Emerita Professor Ardayfio-Schandorf thanked the committee members for their confidence in her as she accepted her election. In order to enable PIAC fulfill its objective, which is to guarantee the effective and responsible management and use of petroleum income, she urged Members to cooperate and work together as a team.
She also used the opportunity to express her gratitude to the recent committee members for their assistance in carrying out the PIAC’s mandate.
Emerita Professor Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schandorf is a trailblazer in numerous domains and has a notable academic career. Her passions and activities began in the early 1970s and have been fostered throughout the course of fifty years by research, mentoring, teaching, consulting, and community outreach initiatives.
She works as a development consultant, an expert in rural energy systems, an environmental advisor, and a geographer. She is also passionate about women’s advocacy, women’s empowerment, and gender research and analysis.
Odeefuo Amoakwa Buadu VIII, the Omanhene of the Breman Asikuma Traditional Area in the Central Region and a representative of the National House of Chiefs, was elected Vice Chairperson for a one-year term at the same gathering. In addition, he serves as the Central Regional House of Chiefs’ president.
Former St. Augustine’s College student in Cape Coast and graduate of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi with a degree in mechanical engineering, Odeefuo Amoakwa Buadu was appointed Paramount chief in 2009.He graduated with a diploma in chieftaincy from the Otumfuo Centre for Traditional Leadership at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) and an executive MBA from the University of Ghana Business School.
Odeefuo has significant experience in engineering and business management, and he has a track record of building shared vision and leading teams of professionals to achieve success in a highly competitive environment. He brings over 11 years of chieftaincy experience to his role, with a proven ability to promote unity, peace, and progress in his traditional area.
The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) was established under Section 51 of the Petroleum Revenue Management Act (PRMA) in 2011. Its primary mandate is to monitor and assess compliance with the Act. The Committee was officially inaugurated and began its work on September 15, 2011.
