Samuel Adu Gyamfi, a Professor at the Political Science Department of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, has asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, are actively considering a running mate from the Ashanti Region for the upcoming 2024 elections.
Speaking with Ghana360news host, Marzuuq Issah on Thursday, November 23, Prof. Adu Gyamfi expressed that given the historical loyalty of the Ashanti Region to the NPP, it would not be surprising if the final choice aligns with this expectation. He highlighted the region’s consistent support for the NPP, citing its substantial contributions to the party’s growth and the backing it provided to candidate Akufo-Addo.
The professor emphasized that both Dr. Bawumia and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Former President John Dramani Mahama, will prioritize selecting a running mate capable of bolstering their vote counts.
Prof. Adu Gyamfi explained that the process involves careful consideration, stating that “They wouldn’t just pick anyone,” and stressing that the chosen candidate must enhance the fortunes of the flagbearer.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mahama has disclosed that the process of selecting his running mate for the 2024 general elections will commence next year.
According to him, the party’s rules dictate that the presidential candidate, national executives, and council of elders collaborate in choosing the suitable candidate. Responding to calls to select his running mate from the Bono Region, Mr. Mahama acknowledged the traditional council’s support and noted that the selection process would begin in the following year.
During a public engagement in Wenchi, the Queen mother of Sunyani, Nana Akosua Dua Sika Asor Brayie, appealed to Mr. Mahama to consider the Bono Region for his running mate, citing the region’s consistent support for him and the NDC. She urged him to reciprocate the loyalty by choosing a vice presidential candidate from the Bono Region, emphasizing the significance of regional representation in leadership roles.
