Due to the chieftaincy issue in Wanchiki, the Chereponi District in the Northeast has decided to cancel this year’s Farmers Day celebration.
Following a rekindled chieftaincy dispute in the Wanchiki hamlet in the Chereponi region of the North East Region, three people were reported dead.
This happened on Monday, November 20, 2023, when tensions between the Jaabu and Forboru clans escalated and bullets broke out in the village early in the morning.
Among the dead was an old woman who was shot because she would not leave her home while the attackers were there to set it on fire. Additionally, it was reported that other individuals who had been shot were in critical condition and had been transported to neighboring Togo.
On the way to Nalerigu, the Wanchiki chief is said to have been beaten, which led to destruction of his car. Wanchiki’s youth rallied and took revenge on the affected neighborhood in retaliation. The Chereponi Police Station is presently holding the chief’s damaged vehicle.
On Thursday, November 30, 2023, the Chereponi District released the following statement: “The public is hereby informed that the District Security Council, at a meeting held on Wednesday 29th November 2023 assessed the security situation in the district following the recent conflict at Wanchiki and resolved based on intelligence report that, the National Farmers Day celebrations in the district be cancelled.”
It also said that: “DISEC will continue to collaborate with the relevant agencies and stakeholders to ensure that peace is restored in the affected conflict areas in the district.”
