In a dramatic escalation of violence in Nkwanta, a town in the Oti Region of Ghana, clashes between members of the Adele and Akyode tribes have resulted in eight fatalities and numerous injuries. Dr. Adam Bonaa, a prominent security analyst, has called on the Oti Regional Minister, Joshua Gmayenaam Makubu, to take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed.

Dr. Bonaa, speaking to Ghana360news, emphasized the preventable nature of the clashes and urged the Regional Minister to assert authority.

“The Regional Minister and his men should ensure that this does not happen again. This was preventable, but unfortunately, we have 8 people dying,” he stated, proposing a ban on all public activities involving the two factions as a means to restore order.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, the Oti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is set to convene an emergency security meeting on Wednesday, November 22, to address the ongoing crisis. Minister Joshua Gmayenaam Makubu, who confirmed the eight deaths, described the chaos as “ethnic clashes” and revealed that similar confrontations had occurred between the tribes two weeks prior.

In response to the escalating violence, the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, acting on the advice of the REGSEC and through Executive Instrument, has imposed a curfew on Nkwanta. Effective from Tuesday, November 21, the curfew spans from 5:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The move comes after an assailant opened fire at the central market area on the same day, resulting in additional casualties.

Security forces from the Oti Regional Security Council have been deployed to the troubled town to restore order and quell the violence. As Nkwanta grapples with this wave of unrest, the urgent call for intervention echoes, with hopes that swift action will bring an end to the clashes and prevent further loss of life in the region.
