Ismail Sherif, popularly known as Black sherif, has not only garnered attention for his musical prowess but also for his bold and often flamboyant fashion choices.

The artist, who goes by the moniker BLACKO, has unveiled a distinctive fashion sense that mirrors the bold and unapologetic nature of his lyrics. His recent appearance during a performance in Gambia further exemplified his penchant for daring fashion.

On November 25th, the VGMA Artiste of The Year took the stage for the first time in Gambia, delivering an electrifying performance that left the audience thoroughly entertained. Videos circulating on social media captured the artist captivating thousands with his dynamic stage presence.

However, it wasn’t just Black Sherif’s musical performance that caught the audience’s attention; his choice of attire sparked discussions on social media. Contrary to his usual oversized trousers, Sherif opted for an outfit resembling female attire, prompting commentary from his fans in Ghana. Yet, the Gambian audience perceived it differently, viewing Black Sherif’s costume as a respectful nod to their culture.

As it turns out, Black Sherif was paying homage to the Gambian culture by dressing akin to the Kankurang, a spirit-masked figure in Mandinka communities of Senegal and The Gambia. The red fiber-like appearance of his costume drew inspiration from this Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, symbolizing protection and order with believed supernatural powers.

The Kankurang is traditionally impersonated by a young man after undergoing a period of initiation. It appears at ceremonies and festivals, serving as a symbol to teach young people about their culture and traditions.

Black Sherif’s fashion choice echoes a trend where artists draw inspiration from Gambian culture. The Kankurang has influenced modern fashion, with designers incorporating elements of its mask and costume into clothing and accessories. Some designers have created masks inspired by the Kankurang, while others use red fiber and leaves to evoke the spirit’s costume.

With Black Sherif’s upcoming headline concert, Zaama Disco, in Ghana, anticipation builds for what he will bring to the stage—both in terms of fashion and, of course, his musical performance.
