Albert Alalzuuga Akuka, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Garu, has declared that he will ask the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to look into the purported military abuses against his people.

Reports from Ghana360news correspondent stated that Mr. Akuka claims that his people were the targets of illegal attacks, some of which occurred while they were reciting the Quran, all in the name of looking for weapons.

“The incident is heartless and disgraceful.” the lawmaker added.

“My residents were brutally beaten after being forcibly awakened from their beds on October 28. Some people were allegedly in the mosque at the time reciting the Quran when they were attacked under the guise of taking weapons. They did find some weapons, one of the commanders I spoke with confirmed,” Mr. Akuka said.

He called the military’s actions even more barbaric and insisted that the military high command issue an official apology.

“This misuse of authority is dishonorable to the uniform. It needs to be looked into, and people who are in charge need to be made answerable. “The military high command needs to apologize to the people of Garu and to Ghana as a whole for this unnecessary and brutal incident,” he continued.

In addition to demanding a comprehensive inquiry, Mr. Akuka promised to take the issue to CHRAJ and emphasized the necessity of controlling the military, claiming that such acts are equivalent to torture and violations of human rights.

This follows a combined military and NS operation that took place on Sunday, October 29, in reaction to an assault on five NS officers who were in the area on a counterterrorism mission.

The National Security Ministry made it clear that the operation’s goals were to find and capture the people responsible for the AK-47s that the young people had fired at their staff.

Many of the men from the impacted areas fled to the forest after the incident.
