According to the Police, a case of assault has been filed against individuals who are allegedly connected to Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam.
After GHOne TV presenter Lantam Papanko filed the complaint at the Mile 7 Police Station on Sunday, October 22, sources at the Police Headquarters told Ghana360news that the case is still under investigation.
Lantam claims the assault taken place on the Ofankor-Amasaman route on Sunday. He has since claimed that he was in the inner lane of the Ofankor-Tantra section when he saw a motor rider trying to overtake him while riding at high speed behind him.
He claimed that when he questioned the rider about his careless riding, the rider became upset. After verbally abusing him, the motorcyclist struck his car and its side mirror.
In an interview with Ghana360news, Lantam stated “I was on my way from the Ofankor roundabout, heading towards the Tantra Roundabout at Mile 7. I was driving in the inner lane when I noticed a motorcyclist approaching from behind.
“As the motorcycle rapidly approached my driver’s side, I observed the rider attempting to overtake me to the right. I couldn’t comprehend why this was happening. To my surprise, he began gesturing for me to vacate the road.”
“Subsequently, he switched lanes and positioned himself on the right side, near the passenger side of my vehicle. It was at this point that he launched into a tirade of insults, questioning my refusal to clear the road. It dawned on me that a black SUV, displaying the ‘Imam’ license plate and equipped with flashing red and blue lights, had been tailing me throughout this bewildering episode.
“In utter bewilderment, I watched as the motorcyclist pulled up alongside my car, continuing to hurl verbal abuse at me.”
“The hostile exchange did not conclude there. In a burst of anger, the motorcyclist physically struck my vehicle with his hands and forcefully struck my side mirror, causing it to swivel.”
Lantam proceeded to explain that a vehicle, presumably linked to the National Chief Imam, suddenly blocked his path, compelling him to come to a stop. He went on to describe that upon stopping, three individuals disembarked from the vehicle and, in collaboration with the motorcyclist, subjected him to a physical assault.
“He confronted me, accusing me of showing disrespect, and employed his helmet to strike me through the car window. Subsequently, the individual on the motorcycle departed, and it was then that I noticed the Chief Imam’s vehicle pull up in front of me suddenly, forcing me to come to an abrupt halt.”
“The motorcyclist once again positioned himself beside my car. He dismounted, removed his helmet, and began questioning my respect and actions, asking why I was behaving as I was. To my astonishment, he employed his helmet to strike my face through the car window.
Simultaneously, about three individuals disembarked from the Chief Imam’s vehicle. They congregated near my position in the car and initiated an assault, repeatedly slapping and striking me on my head and face. Their questioning revolved around my failure to give way, despite the presence of the Chief Imam in the vehicle. They chastised me for not showing due respect and blocking the path of the elderly man who remained seated inside the car. Rather than moving out of their way, I remained in the car, which they found perplexing.
“The individual with the helmet struck my face through the window about four times, while the others continued to hit and slap me. In a bid to protect myself, I raised my hands, but one of them eventually landed a blow to my forehead.”
The presenter went on to recount that he sought medical attention at Achimota Hospital and subsequently lodged a formal complaint at the Mile 7 Police Station.
